Celebrating the life of

Rev. Dr. Cecil A. Hodges

May 22, 1924 - April 09, 2011

Rev. Dr. Cecil A. Hodges

Cecil A. Hodges of Savannah, Georgia, husband of Kathleen B. Hodges for sixty-six years, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at Savannah Square under the care of Hospice Savannah.

Born in Nathlie, Virginia on May 2, 1924, Dr. Hodges learned his early disciplines on his parent's farm in rural Virginia. He served for four years in the United States Naval Air Force during the Second World War, receiving an honorable discharge in 1945. Just prior to his discharge in Jacksonville, Florida, he met his wife to be. The Hodges were married in 1945.

He is survived by one daughter, Margie, and son-in-law Herman Mongin of Savannah, Georgia; two grandchildren: Melissa Haney Brent of Lugoff, SC and David Mongin Danielle of Atlanta; great-grandchildren: Austen, Kaylah, Gabrielle, Aaliyah and Zechariah Haney and Isabella, Vivianna, and Adelaide Mongin. He is preceded in death by one daughter, Bonnie Colvin.

Dr. Hodges' ministerial training began in 1953 at Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri. In addition to this theological work at BBC, he holds an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from the California Graduate School of Theology; a Doctorate of Human Letters from Baptist University of America and an honorary Doctorate in Literature from Freedom University.

Dr. Hodges' first pastorate was the Bible Baptist Church in Fernandina Beach, Florida from 1954-1957. He began with 13 members and after three years, the church had grown to more than 250 members, with 27 men entering the ministry.

In January, 1957, he became the pastor of Bible Baptist Church in Savannah, Georgia. He saw membership climb from 31 to more than 4000, with more than 2600 attending weekly services.
Dr. Elmer Towns, former Sunday School editor of Christian Life Magazine attested to the growth of the church in a chapter in his book, America's Fastest Growing Churches. Success Magazine also carried a feature article on the success of the Bible Baptist Church Sunday School.

Among Dr. Hodges most rewarding achievements was the founding of Bible Baptist Day School in 1970. The school offers a Christ-centered education from Kindergarten through High School.
Because of Dr. Hodges' many faceted ministries, he was often invited to speak to churches and schools throughout our nation. He is a nationally recognized Bible teacher and preacher whose dedication and zeal for the cause of Christ and His Church is seldom matched in these times.

Under Dr. Hodges' leadership, Bible Baptist Church organized 96 churches. A total of more than 100 men and 41 ladies are now serving on a full-time basis in churches and Christian schools throughout our nation and around the world.

In addition to Hodges' pastoral responsibilities, he served as Founder and President of the North American Baptist Missionary Association; President of Baptist University of America from 1976-1982; Vice President for 1 year and member of the Board of Directors for 8 years of the Baptist Bible Fellowship International; Board of Directors of American Association of Christian Schools; President and Founder of Georgia Baptist Fellowship; Editorial Review Board of Baptist Bible Tribune; Board of Trustees of Tennessee Temple University; and the Crime Commission of Savannah. He was a Rotarian for many years serving in roles of member of Board of Directors and President of local chapter; Treasurer of the Rotary District of 60 clubs; and travelled as a special envoy to Russia to establish Rotary Clubs. He received the Will Watt Fellow and Paul Harris Fellow awards for service during his years as a Rotarian.

Dr. Hodges retired from Bible Baptist Church of Savannah in September, 1998, after serving 41 years as her pastor. He travelled throughout America preaching in conferences and revivals for the following 2 years.

In June, 1999, Dr. Hodges began the Effingham Baptist Church in Rincon, Georgia. The church was organized in November, 1999 with 65 charter members and grew to over 200 members until his retirement in 2005. Following his retirement he completed 2 books: A Commentary on the Book of Mark and Stewardship One, a 3 week stewardship program with 5 pastoral messages and 5 Sunday School lessons.

God greatly used this rural farm boy to be able to preach to millions over the radio, in revivals, Bible conferences and the printed page in the Savannah Morning News weekly church page.

The family wishes to express deep appreciation to Dr. M.A. Masroor. Also to the staff at Savannah Squares for their assistance during his stay there. Also, thanks to Debbie Boucas of Hospice Savannah for your care.

Funeral service will be 6:00 p.m., Monday, April 11, 2011 at Bible Baptist Church, 4700 Skidaway Road, Savannah, Georgia. Dr. Hodges will lie in state from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the church prior to the service. There will be a private burial.

His Lord said unto him, well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord, Matthew 25:21 KJV.

Remembrances: Bible Baptist Church Children's Building Fund, 4700 Skidaway Road, Savannah, Georgia 31404; or Hospice Savannah, 1352 Eisenhower Drive, Savannah, Georgia.

In celebration of a life well lived: I remember Dr. Hodges. I attended BBC for a short year prior to entering college. Each Sunday was a present every time Dr. Hodges preached. His wisdom, passion, and love for God's word has and still inspires us to be faithful servants. While he will be missed, he will never be forgotten. My condolences to the family of Dr. Hodges - may God continue to comfort your hearts and bless you for many, many years to come.

As a young boy I attended the BBC with my grandmother and grandfather during the summer months until my grandfathers death in 1971. Preacher Hodges preached his funeral. I started visiting when the church was in a little brick building with the Sunday school classes out in the big white building. I believe this was on Waters Avenue. I remember the first time I ever went into the auditorium on Skidaway, I thought it was the biggest building in the world. I enjoyed the time spent with the church family of BBC and will always treasure it. Those memories will always be cherished!!!!!

My deepest sympathy to Kitty, Margie and Family. Pastor Hodges was a wonderful and devoted pastor, husband, father, friend. I cannot thank him enough for the wisdom he gave to me when seeking a church family here in the Michigan area. His wise counsel has helped place me in a wonderful church family here. He was a great friend to me and my family while living there in Savannah. I am forever grateful for his stedfastness in the preaching of God's Word. It's through his ministry, that I am able to say with confidence, we'll meet again! He will be greatly missed. Margie, you, your mother, and family are in my prayers. May God's grace be enough to get you through this most difficult time. Love in Christ Sue Howard Brand

Faithful to his Lord, faithful to God’s Word, faithful to his wife and children, faithful to his church, faithful as a friend. Dr. Hodges was a great example of a godly man, a remarkable leader and a Christian gentleman. It was my privilege to serve our Lord with him for three brief years. His selfless investment in the lives of so many can be understood only by studying the life and ministry of Jesus. Our thoughts go out to Mrs. Hodges, Margie and family. We are praying to our gracious God for all of you. Yvonne and Lamont Scott

So many great memories, where do you start? I was priviledged to grow up at Bible Baptist from a child to an adult. Revivals, youth camps, youth dept, KJ Church, Bus Ministry, etc. Dr. Hodges preached fire and brimstone messages saturated with the Word of God. I remember coming home after church and listening to Dr. Hodges on the radio as we ate dinner. It was an exciting time to be involved in the ministry of Dr. Hodges in the 60's, 70's and 80's. God only knows, how many people came to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ through Dr. Hodge's. My heartfelt prayers go out to Mrs, Hodges, Margie, Herman and the grandchildren. What a homecoming party they are having in heaven right now. II Tim 4:7 - I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Praise God for the life of Cecil A. Hodges.
